SibsagarSibsagar, one of the modern districts of Assam, came into prominence under the Ahom rulers. The Ahoms, a group of the Shan invaders, under the hegemony of Sukhapha, first conquered the eastern portion of the country and later on, his descendants ruled the entire country for nearly six hundred years, until the British annexed the region in 1826. The town is built around the large 129-acre artificial tank called the Sibsagar Lake (which had given the town its name), dug over 200 years ago. One can still find the archaeological remains, palaces, and temples of the Ahoms, now being preserved as national protected monuments.more... History of SibsagarSibsagar was once the capital of the Ahom rulers who dominated Assam for more than 600 years. They ruled Assam virtually uninterrupted for 6 centuries until their kingdom fell to the British, in 1826. ‘The Ocean of Shiva’ is the literal meaning of the Sibsagar name, strewn with telltale ruins of a powerful empire. The most remarkable landscape of the town is the Sivasagar tank comprising 129 good acres. Although situated within the heart of the town, the water level of the tank is above the level of the town.
